Trying to Fill the Hole

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…” — Romans 12:2 (ESV)

Reflection:

We live in a world obsessed with intelligence—human and artificial. Success is often measured by how much we know, how efficiently we think, and how quickly we adapt. But is the brain truly the most powerful part of who we are?

I believe the answer is no. The brain is a marvel, yes—but it’s still just the hardware. The real power lies in the soul, which runs the software of our lives. And that soul? It was given to us by the breath of God Himself.

“Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life…” — Genesis 2:7 (ESV)

That divine breath means we are more than machines. We’re spiritual beings, and as such, we all carry within us a longing—a God-shaped hole that nothing in this world can fill.

I spent years trying to fill that hole with achievements, approval, even religious routines. I leaned on logic, strategy, and strength of will. But it never lasted. Because what I was really lacking wasn’t knowledge—it was connection. I was trying to live life powered by my brain, but my soul was starving.

Only Jesus could fill the void. Only the Holy Spirit could rewrite the broken code in my thinking and restore the rhythm of my soul.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (ESV)

The moment I surrendered—when I admitted I couldn’t fix or fill the hole myself—I found peace. A peace that surpassed understanding. A power greater than my own.

The brain may be smart.

But the Spirit of God? He brings life.

And He’s not looking for brilliance—He’s looking for surrender.

Closing Thought:

Are you still trying to fill that hole on your own?

Are you leaning on your understanding, or are you trusting the One who formed your soul?

Artificial intelligence will never compare to the soul of a man redeemed by grace, renewed by the Spirit, and anchored in Christ. That’s what sets us apart. That’s what fills the hole.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for creating me with a soul that longs for You. Forgive me for trying to fill the emptiness with anything but Your presence. Help me to surrender—not just my mind, but my whole life—to Your Spirit. Renew my thinking, restore my soul, and teach me to walk with You every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
